Gold Rush Summer Challenge 2010 : Results

Team Synergy/Sno-Air won the Gold Rush Summer Challenge in 5:33. The long wet spring had filled foothill reservoirs and swollen the rivers. The Tuolumne river, the usual water section for the race  was flowing with 2300 cfs, 5 times our usual race day flow. After pre- race reconnaissance the river was deemed too dangerous and the course re-routed to Don Pedro Lake which provided a beautiful paddling section. The dry dirt banks 50 or 100 ft in height for the past few years are covered with sparkling water and it made a great paddling venue. The bike course also had to change and was adjusted to be a little shorter, more varied, a little more technical and by general concensus, more entertaining.

Teams began with an orienteering section of almost 9 miles miles on the rocky terrain of Red Hills where 'Calico Racing’ emerged first but having not reached all checkpoints. First out  with a full slate of checkpoints was Synergy.

As usual, after coming off the orienteering course several teams quit looking at their maps and cycled off down La Grange road instead of taking Old Don Pedro road; this added several miles to their bike ride. While the heat was not as bad as we have had on the Summer Challenge, this was close to the first hot weekend of the year and everyone found staying hydrated was a constant chore. Synergy stuck to the right route, reached all the cycling checkpoints and was first to the lake where they maintained their position to finish with a clear lead.

Second was the all women team Lucky and third was ‘Two Old Fat Guys’ consisting of Jerry McDaniel and his two sons who put in a great performance against a large field of 24 teams to finish 3rd.

Thanks are due to  the volunteers who make an event like this possible; Greg Stahl, Mike Gallas, Johnathan Crane, Leslie Antonis.
